Now With Comments!

After a good 5 or 6 years without them, comments have made a return to my blog!

I’ve been thinking about adding comments again for a while now. My whole site is statically generated from Markdown files using Zola, it’s not a dynamic webapp like Wordpress, so that made things just a bit more challenging. I really wanted to find a comment system that I could host myself, too, and privacy was also a big concern. I don’t want to expose anyone’s personal information! The less I collect, the better I feel.

After doing some research, I settled on the Remark42 comment system. It’s light-weight, privacy focused, and self-hosted, so I can run it locally. It allows you to log in to post and manage your posts using Email, GitHub, and Google, but you can also post pseudo-anonymously if you prefer.

The only downside I can see is that Remark42 uses cookies, but these are only used for OAuth 2.0 login and CSRF protection, nothing more. There’s no tracking or metrics of any kind. That was really important to me.

Anyway, I don’t expect a lot of comments here, I think I have three readers world-wide, but that’s OK by me, I’m glad to have them back. I’m curious to see how it goes. If I start to get a lot of spam, I’ll revisit it.
